NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) - On Tuesday May 17, 2011 at 12:00 PM, the Newton Police Dispatchers received a call from the alarm company for Brookside Terrace Apartments reporting a fire alarm at the apartment building, 33 Mill Street.
Subsequent 9-1-1 callers reported smoke and fire throughout the building. Newton Police Officers immediately responded to the scene while Newton Fire Department and Newton First Aid Squad were dispatched.
Officers on scene identified and directed emergency responders to the fire location, apartment 5N on the fifth floor of the ten story building. They then began evacuating the heavily smoke filled fifth floor but were unable to enter apartment 5N due to the heavy smoke, heat and fire. Shortly thereafter, firefighters arrived with breathing apparatus, made entry to the apartment, began efforts to extinguish the fire and rescued the occupant from the apartment. The victim, identified as John Heemer, age 58, was taken to the fourth floor where emergency personnel began performing CPR. He was then transported to
the Newton Medical Center where despite everyone's efforts, Mr. Heemer was pronounced dead at 12:48 PM.
