Fire at Sand Bar club in Jersey City caused by careless use of torches, officials say

Nj.com

JERSEY CITY - Workers using torches on an outside wall caused tonight's one-alarm fire at the Sand Bar restaurant and club in Jersey City, fire officials said.

The fire, which was reported at 5:27 p.m., started outside, but rose inside the wall to the second floor and eventually climbed to the roof, Fire Director Armando Roman said.

There were no injuries. Roman did not know what kind of work the construction workers were doing.

He described damage to the building at 41 Marin Blvd. as moderate to heavy.

The fire, which was brought under control at 5:41, was classified as accidental.

Service on Hudson-Bergen Light Rail trains that pass the location was temporarily halted.

The club is closed right now and opens Memorial Day weekend.
