The building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived about 9:30 p.m., according a firefighter on the scene. The fire was reported extinguished around 10:45 p.m., state police said.
David Carcieri, senior executive director of the Sussex County YMCA said the fire in the program lodge is believed to be electrical in origin. No one was hurt.
The camp is an active summer camp, but the building was not in use when the fire started, state police said. Larry Lev, senior vice president at the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, said the lodge is not located near where the children at the overnight camp reside. He did not know how many kids were at the camp this week.
The fire will not affect the day-to-day operation of the camp. The building that burned was used for programs taught during the day, he said.
