CARNEYS POINT TWP. - Carneys Point Township police are still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to a multi-vehicle accident on Hawks Bridge Road here that left one person dead, Sgt. Dale Fahr said late Monday afternoon.

Police weren't releasing the names of those involved in the crash early Monday morning, but Fahr said a woman from Penns Grove was killed in the accident.

The sergeant said officers from the Carneys Point Township Police Department still had to talk with family members and sort out the details of this complicated crash scene on Hawks Bridge Road, in the area between Orchard Drive and the Carneys Point/Mannington border.

Fahr said as of Monday afternoon he could say that three vehicles were involved during the accident.

The vehicles involved, according to police, included a Toyota pickup truck, driven by a Millville resident, that was traveling westbound; a Chevy Cavalier, driven by the Penns Grove woman, that was traveling eastbound; and a Honda sedan, driven by a Carneys Point resident, that was also traveling eastbound.

Following the crash, pieces of a badly-mangled gray vehicle were strewn over the roadway. The gray vehicle suffered heavy damage to its front and side and came to rest in the shoulder of the roadway. A truck, facing the opposite direction, also sat on the road's shoulder.

Fahr said the drivers of the Toyota and Honda were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries were not released Monday.

Officers were called to the crash scene at 8:53 a.m.

In addition to the Carneys Point Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police also responded to Hawks Bridge Road to assist in the accident investigation.

The police were assisted by Carneys Point Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Pennsville Fire and Rescue Co., Deepwater Fire Co., and Life Support 5.

The fire departments remained at the crash site for more than two hours. The ambulances stayed in service for close to two hours.
