Passaic NJ. A Three alarm fire tore though an attic and second floor bedroom on 4/3/10 at 288 Howe Ave. Engine 1 arrived on the scene took a hydrant and line in and told dispatch they had a light smoke coming from the attic. Members from engine 1 stretched a 1 ¾ line went inside to the attic and found the main body of fire A crew from Engine 4 backed them up with a 1 ¾ line. Truck 1 arrived on the scene and began to set ground ladders up around the building, crews in the attic found large volumes of fire. Acting Deputy chief Geosits asked dispatch for a 2nd alarm when the fire began showing from all sides on the top floor of the building.
The Carlstadt Fire Department was notified for a Fast Team and Clifton and Paterson was notified for a Truck and an Engine to stand by. The Deputy at this time ordered all personnel out of the building and sounded evacuation tones, as the fire began to advance and vented itself through the roof. Paterson truck was redirected to the scene. Shortly after collapse of the roof on the B side.
The Deputy then asked for a 3rd alarm an Engine from Wallington, Garfield, Clifton, Little Falls, Paterson and Rutherford was sent to standby at the Eastside and West side Firehouses. Mutual aid companies helped in setting up master steams to the B and D side to protect the exposures. Chief Trentacost arrived on the scene and took over command. The fire was placed under control in 45 minutes. The fire originally started on the 2nd floor back bedroom and advanced itself through a second stairway leading to the attic. There was a minor injury to one Passaic firefighter, he was treated by Passaic EMS and returned to duty. The fire is being investigated by the Passaic fire investigator.
