Wharton man injured after striking car, bridge in Lake Hopatcong

Daily Record & NJ Firefighting

JEFFERSON - A Wharton man was injured after crashing his car into a vehicle and a bridge while traveling north on Route 15 on Tuesday night, police said.

John C. Harsanyi, 40, first struck a vehicle at the intersection of Route 15 North and Berkshire Valley Road shortly before 10 p.m., and continued on for about a quarter of a mile before hitting a cement bridge abutment, police said.

Harsanyi's vehicle came to rest in the travel lanes, about 451 feet from the bridge. A third vehicle that swerved to avoid Hasanyi's disabled car was then rear-ended, police said.

Jefferson Rescue Squad was dispatched to the scene for injuries. Upon arrival, the squad determined that Harsanyi needed to be extricated. Jefferson Fire Co.2 was immediately dispatched, along with a 2nd and 3rd rig from the squad. Firefighters worked on the vehicle and controlled a large oil spill, while a 2nd engine set up a landing zone.

Harsanyi was airlifted to Morristown Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries. He was listed in fair condition on Wednesday afternoon, said hospital spokesman Rob Seman.

No other injuries were reported, police said. The makes and models of the vehicles involved in the two separate crashes were not immediately available.
